MANAGEMENT CONSULTING vs STRATEGY CONSULTING – Is there a difference?

In the world of Business Consulting, there are basically two types of consulting, namely Management Consulting and Strategy Consulting.  Many people are under the assumption that they are the same thing. Are they the same thing? It depends. I will explain later.

In the world of business, there are fundamentally two questions that need to be answered:

  • What are we going to do? and
  • How are we going to do it?

A Strategy Consultant would answer the first question and a Management Consultant would answer the second question.

It may be that your business is asking both of these questions, so there could be an overlap. Hence, “it depends”.

In an example that relates directly to our core service offering, namely the expansion of Nigerian Businesses into the United Kingdom or South Africa, the business directors may ask the following questions:

After a full analysis, should the business expand into the United Kingdom or South Africa or both or anywhere else in the World?  STRATEGY CONSULTANT
How do we launch in that country (e.g. South Africa)?  There could be an overall analysis or consultants for specific aspects may be engaged (e.g. supply chain, sales, compliance and risk, HR, etc.)  MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT
